BAS800 — Beginning Business Writing

Individuals who need basic writing development or who are advanced English language learners will benefit from this class that focuses on writing skills for the workplace. The TABE language assessment will be given to achieve a baseline on student needs. A post-test will show achievement in language skills. This class will cover multiple grammar topics and business writing applications. Simple, compound, and complex sentence structure and papragraphing will be covered. Instruction will support students in using correct marks of punctuation and strategies for correct spelling. Students will learn parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, count and non-count nouns, verb tenses (present, past, future, progressing, perfect, modals), articles, verb/preposition collocations, regular/irregular plural nouns, and possessive structures. The importance of planning and revising documents will be stressed during the class. Authentic writing exercises will allow students to practice their developing writing skills. These exercises may include but not be limited to writing resumes, e-mails, applications, memos, business letters, reports, and notes. Through these exercises students will also gain a more thorough understanding of the types of business writing.
