CMM416 — News & the Community
This course is aimed primarily at students considering a career in journalism, local writers interested in free- lance work for area newspapers and community volunteers who do public relations work for their organizations. This entry-level journalism class introduces students to newspaper and broadcast news values, the role of the press in the community, critical analysis of local print electronic news coverage and writing for print and broadcast media. In addition, students will study the role of the reporterin covering news, the responsibity of remaining neutral and unbiased, the differences between straight news reporting, editorials and opinion columns, and a history of the media's role in American society and politics. Teaching methods include lectures, class discussions, individual conferences with the instructor, guest speakers, and independent coverage of at least one college or community event. Students are required to bring a daily newspaper of their choice to every class. (Text required.)
