This course surveys the history of Western Civilization from the medieval period to the present. Students are introduced to the political, social, cultural, economic transformations of European and American societies over the last 500 years. Topics include the Enlightenment, French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, Romanticism, European imperialism, the two world wars, Feminism, the fall of Soviet communism, and globalization. Along with major historical developments, students will explore how people’s lives, cultures, identities, and ways of thinking have changed over time.
