This course is designed to introduce the student to the role of the nurse in the comprehensive health care of mothers and newborn infants during the childbearing phase of the life-cycle. A family centered approach applying the nursing process is the framework for health care delivery to families from diverse populations. The student is guided to integrate previously learned knowledge and skills. Content includes social and biological sciences, nutrition, pharmacology, growth and development, patient/family teaching, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice. Emphasis is placed on the study of relationships and responsibilities as the family expands. This course has a lecture, lab, simulation, and clinical component.
