LAN 131 - Japanese 1 and Culture LAN 131 - Japanese 1 and Culture 3 Course Description: Japanese 1 and Culture is an introductory course for beginners. Students will learn Japanese language by developing all four communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. They will also learn the Japanese phonetic alphabet, hiragana , some kanji characters , and how to read and write basic sentence patterns and expressions in Japanese. They will respond to expressions and gain an understanding and respect for a different culture.
