HIST147 — History of Europe from the Fall of Rome to the 17th Century
(HUMD, GEIR, GEEL) One of two related courses (with HIST 148 ), which may be taken in either order. These courses trace the accumulated experience of Western civilization and its worldwide relationships and provide a contextual framework for integrating all areas of Western human activity and thought. HIST 147 is an inquiry into the foundations of Western civilization and its odyssey to the 17th century. Focuses on areas such as the background and the legacy of the ancient world, the distinctive medieval world view, the creation of new social and religious ideals during the Renaissance and Reformation, relationships between cultural and political institutions, the growth of absolutism and constitutionalism, artistic and literary creativity.
