HIST255 — Modern Middle East
(HUMD, GEIR, GEEL, GCP) Surveys key historical moments, from the decline of the Ottoman Empire and the impact of imperialism to the rise of nationalism and state formation through the present. This course examines major political, social, cultural, and intellectual developments. While political narratives often dominate discussions of the region, HIST 255 takes a broader approach, exploring Middle Eastern history not only through a sociopolitical lens but also through science, technology, gender dynamics, ethnolinguistic diversity, art, sports, and cinema. Through this course, students gain a deeper understanding of the Middle East’s complexities and diversity while engaging with multiple perspectives and challenging monolithic portrayals.
