CHEM 2344 — Introduction to Organic & Biological Chemistry

The goal of the course is to provide both a sound theoretical background in chemistry and an understanding of the relationship of chemistry to society in general and the health-related professions in particular. Material included in the course reviews atomic and molecular structure, surveys organic nomenclature and functional group reactions, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, metabolism, enzymes, an introduction to molecular genetics and nutrition. Laboratory emphasis is toward techniques such as crystallization, distillation, and chromatographic methods. Instrumental methods to be included are GC, FTIR, MS and pNMR.

Prerequisites: CHEM 1215, CHEM 1315, MATH 1513
