HIS197 — History of Rock Music and Culture
3 Cr. Per Week: 3 Lec. This course is a survey of the history of rock music and culture from its origins in the rhythm & blues and country/western music traditions of the early 20 th century through its many subgenres to the present. Special attention will be given to the production and consumption of rock music within historical, cultural and technological contexts. The course will reveal how rock music as an art form is situated at the nexus of popular culture and the commercial marketplace. It is unnecessary for students to be able to play, compose or read music for this course.
