HIT 116 — Clinical Classification Systems II with Lab

Emphasizes the principles and conventions of the HCPCS/CPT clinicalclassification systems used in today’s healthcare settings. Other topicsin the course include applicable licensing and regulatory issues relativeto coded data, payment and reimbursement systems, professionalethics, content of the medical record, decision-making processes, datavalidity and integrity, classification systems and nomenclature, andquality assessment and improvement. Students will be expected toapply decision making in record review for complete, accurate, andtimely coding. HCPCS/CPT coding will also be practiced and applied inconjunction with ICD-10-CM for hospital ambulatory surgery, thephysician’s office setting and other outpatient settings. The CMSdeveloped Prospective Payment System for ambulatory care will bereviewed. Concepts covered in the class are explored in greater detail inthe coding lab. Corequisites: ALH 220 and BIO 114
