PTA 1112 - Pathology and Pharmacology PTA 1112 - Pathology and Pharmacology 2 Credit Hours Course Description: This course prepares Physical Therapist Assistant students to understand disease processes and their impact on patient care across body systems. Students will master medical terminology, explore disease mechanisms, epidemiology, and risk factors while learning to differentiate between infectious agents and inflammatory processes. The course covers pain types, tissue injury and repair, and common diagnostic procedures including imaging and laboratory tests. Students receive exposure to pharmacology, learning how medications affect various medical conditions and when to consult the supervising physical therapist. Core competencies include interpreting lab values, recognizing clinical manifestations of pathological conditions, and understanding medical and surgical management approaches. Students will examine system-specific pathologies affecting the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, integumentary, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, renal, reproductive, hepatic, and endocrine systems while learning appropriate physical therapy interventions across the lifespan. Emergency response protocols, vital sign monitoring, and communication with healthcare teams are emphasized.
