PTA 1201 - Pediatric Development, Conditions and Treatment PTA 1201 - Pediatric Development, Conditions and Treatment 1 Credit Hours Course Description: This course provides an in-depth exploration of pediatric growth, development, and movement from birth through adolescence, emphasizing the integration of developmental theories into evidence-informed physical therapy practice. Students will learn to assess, document, and treat pediatric clients using a holistic and systems-based approach that incorporates gross and fine motor milestones, motor control, sensory integration, and psychosocial development. Learners will examine musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and psychosocial development, including the implications of neuroplasticity and common pediatric diagnoses. Emphasis is placed on functional assessments, therapeutic play, family-centered care, and individualized treatment planning within the physical therapist’s plan of care. Students will also explore the unique needs of children with special needs, including identifying future functional limitations and participation barriers in community and educational settings. Hands-on skill development includes performing standardized pediatric assessments, recognizing pediatric emergencies, using play therapeutically, and effectively communicating with children, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
