PTA 1211 - Geriatric Conditions and Treatment PTA 1211 - Geriatric Conditions and Treatment 1 Credit Hours Course Description: This course explores the multifaceted process of aging and its impact on human movement, function, and quality of life. Students will examine key theories of aging and apply them to clinical decision-making and treatment planning for older adults. Emphasis is placed on understanding age-related physiological, neurological, sensory, and psychosocial changes, and their effects on posture, balance, motor control, and functional independence. Students will gain proficiency in assessing and addressing impairments commonly associated with aging through evidence-informed therapeutic strategies. The course integrates motor learning and neuroplasticity principles to design individualized interventions within the physical therapist’s plan of care. Key functional assessment tools-including balance, mobility, and cognitive evaluations-are introduced and practiced, alongside prescription and progression of functional, multi-joint exercises for older adults with varying levels of health and mobility. The course emphasizes ethical practice, advocacy, and the importance of recognizing environmental, social, community, and legal factors influencing care for aging populations. Students will develop strategies to effectively communicate with patients, caregivers, and the healthcare team, while promoting autonomy, dignity, and quality of life in older adults. 5 or better
