This course will examine American history from the mid-1840s to the late 1870s, with a primary focus on the Civil War and Reconstruction. Emphasis will be placed on issues of race, gender, politics, economics, society, and military matters. The institution of slavery will be analyzed in the context of the section rift it caused among the American population and how it was a major factor in bringing about the Civil War. In addition, the Reconstruction Era as well as the impact of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments in the United States and what that meant-and didn’t mean-for the American people will be explored.
