3 credits · 3 hours

In this studio course, students are introduced to the basic concepts, techniques, and tools of printmaking. Students focus on a general overview of the history of printmaking and papermaking. Students learn about papermaking and lithographic and intaglio printmaking processes. They explore monotype, relief, drypoint etching, reduction, collagraph, and screen-printing processes to create prints. Students use a variety of materials and mediums while exploring methods related to the basics of registration, layering images, plate preparation, ink application, and small editions. They work through stages of printmaking from developing a concept, sketching, troubleshooting through test prints, culminating in a final print. Students learn appropriate preparations, use, care, and disposal of printmaking materials and safe studio practices. Students implement the elements and principles of art and design in creation of original compositions that represent observed and invented forms. Additionally, students articulate the subject, form, construction, and content of works of art using formal and conceptual analysis through verbal and written critiques.
