SOCY 290 — Sociology of Work
This course will focus on jobs and workplace organizations from a sociological perspective. In doing so, it will develop students’ understanding of sociology and expand their ability to both anticipate and contend with trends in the structure of work. The course will describe and analyze: the foundational theories and methods of the sociological study of work; historical changes in/to the configuration and meanings of work; labor processes, markets, and careers; occupational differentiation; segmentation in and stratification of work; workplace cultures and identities; new forms of employment, including the impacts of technology and globalization; the relationship between work, the political economy, and social organizations and institutions; and unions, worker power, and other forms of resistance to the organization, management, and control of work.
