HLTH 1324 — Electronic Health Records

This course presents both manual and electronic records management application and principles in the administrative, financial, reimbursement, and clinical patient environments including generally-accepted business practices. Emphasis is placed on legal, regulatory, and accrediting guidelines for security, control, ownership, and access to records including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) standards for hospitals, clinics, and alternative healthcare delivery systems utilizing an electronic health record. Role of the health information professional and how American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) role is integral to the healthcare delivery system is discussed. Student will be required to collect, maintain, manage, and utilize Electronic Health Record (EHR) functions for patient care, reimbursement, financial, and administrative purposes. Student will be required to apply and practice HIPAA, Release of Information (ROI), and legal requirements in a simulated patient care setting utilizing an EHR.
