ART-270 — Egyptian Art/Culture/Religion
This course will be given in conjunction with travel to Egypt over Winter Break 2001. The course will focus on ancient Egyptian history, culture and art from the rise of Egyptian civilization in the Neolithic Period to the absorption of Egypt by the Roman Empire. Special attention will be given to Egyptian religion, particularly beliefs per- taining to the afterlife, and to the art objects which were created to serve the dead. Students will also examine the importance of the Pharaoh in Ancient Egypt, traditional views on gender roles in Ancient Egypt, and current ethical questions about excavating tombs and examining mummies. Since modern Egypt is also rich in Islamic monuments (which we will have an opportunity to visit), students will also examine the rise of Islam and the manner in which Islamic beliefs are manifest in Islamic architectural style. This will necessitate some comparisons between the belief systems and art styles of ancient and modern Egypt.
