This 80 hour Hospital Billing & Coding program prepares students to navigate the complexities of CPT, ICD-9, DRG and HCPCS coding methodologies as they relate to inpatient and outpatient hospital billing and coding. Key topics reviewed include the skills necessary to: manually file claims (CMS-1500 and UB-04 Claim Forms); trace delinquent claims and appeal denied claims; monitor compliance with regulations; and to extract coding information from the medical record. Other topics include: the Prospective Payment System; MS-DRGs; Correct Coding Initiative; Uniform Hospital Detail Data Set definitions; APCs and RVRRBSs; utilizing EOB's and RAs; capturing patient services; revenue codes; charge master; and other regulations and guidelines. After obtaining 6 months to 2 years of suggested work experience, students could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder - Hospital Exam (CPC-H); the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Specialists (CCS) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams. Prerequisite Requirement: In addition to a high school diploma and or a GED equivalent; anyone interested in taking this program should have at least a minimum of 6 months of recent medical billing & coding experience OR have completed an entry level medical billing and coding program which included medical terminology.
