BIT-200 — Principles of Biotechnology
This combined lecture-laboratory course introduces the field of biotechnology. It discusses the history of the biopharmaceutical industry, the drug discovery process, and biopharmaceutical drugs currently on the market. Biotechnology applications such as gene therapy, reproductive cloning, genetic fingerprinting, recombinant DNA technology, and protein expression systems will also be discussed. The laboratory exercises will simulate working in a biotechnology lab and will include Good Manufacturing Practices, operation of standard equipment (such as PCR and gel electrophoresis instruments), preparing solutions, writing protocols, maintaining laboratory notebooks, and presenting experimental data. 3/3/0
