CHEM 202 — Organic Chemistry II
3 Lecture Hours, 3 Lab Hours, 4 Credits Prerequisites: CHEM 201 Course Fees: C, H This is the second semester of a two-semester sequential course presenting the basic principles of organic chemistry, with a focus on the study of the properties and synthesis of the major organic functional groups including conjugated alkenes and alkynes, aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and amines. Lecture also covers ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy as an analytical tool for conjugated systems. Laboratory exercises involve further practice in microscale synthesis, separation, purification and analysis techniques of representative compounds from the major functional groups covered in lecture, including hands-on operation of modern instrumental methods such as FTIR, NMR and UV spectroscopy. General Education Category: Science – Scientific Knowledge & Reasoning (SKR) Chinese
