DENT 102 — Dental Science II

2 Lecture Hours, 2 Credits Prerequisites: SPEH 101, DENT 101, ENGL 101 Corequisites: DENT 105, DENT 107, DENT 110 This course will provide a continued study of the dynamics of oral health, preventive dentistry, risks and disease prevention, treatment of dental disease, and follow-up to the disciplines of oral embryology and histology. The course will introduce the dental assisting student through lectures to the dental sciences, oral pathology, review of the recognition and identification of normal oral tissues and anomalies, nutrition, and pharmacology which includes the most used and prescribed pharmaceuticals in dentistry. An emphasis will be placed on systemic disorders and related oral sequelae, and the treatment of patients with special needs. The course also includes nutrition with an applicable project. Finally, the course will give an overall understanding of pharmacology about drug requirements, regulations, agencies, prescriptions, reactions, indications, contraindications, most used, anesthetics, and agents used to treat dental-related infections. Students must receive a grade of ‘C’ or higher in all dental courses.
