3 Lecture Hours, 3 Credits Prerequisites: ENGL 060 This course examines the central role of popular music in American life, assessing its importance as both a musical and social phenomenon. It races the chronological development of popular music as a broad family of styles and genre. The course not only analyzes ways in which popular music has changed over the last two hundred years, but also addresses why it changed situating musical styles & developments within a rich historical context that includes issues of race, gender, and class.
