PHYS 117 — Introduction to Geometric & Wave Optics
3 Lecture Hours, 2 Lab, 4 Credits Prerequisites: MATH 121 or permission Course Fees: C, H Introduction to Geometric & Wave Optics is an introductory course in Optics in which the basic concepts in light and its behavior will be discussed. The focus of this course is the study of the wave nature of light and the associated phenomena. The course consists of two general subcategories of Geometric Optics and Wave optics. Reflection, refraction, and image formation, employing ray optics, will be the main topics of the geometric optics while interference, diffraction, polarization, and thin film interference outline the wave optics. The three-hour weekly lectures are complemented by weekly laboratory experiments. Lecture topics supported by a lab component.
