CARD 140 — Radiation Safety in Invasive Cardiology

This course prepares students entering the invasive realm of cardiology for safely working around ionizing radiation. Students will learn what ionizing radiation is, potential effects on the body, and how to keep patients, themselves, and their colleagues safe during procedures. Fluoroscopy and cineangiography will be discussed. Principles of ALARA, time, distance, shielding, and the inverse square law will be cov ered as well as stochastic and deterministic effects of ionizing radiation and how best to mitigate them. Prerequisite(s): CARD-120 Corequisite(s): CARD-150, CARD-155
