CJUS 115 — Introduction to Criminology
This course will define crime and evaluate the various ways crime is measured. Students will be provided with an overview of the more popular criminological theories, emphasizing the biological, psychological and sociological schools of thought. In addition, crime control and pr evention strategies as they relate to each theory will be examined in terms of theory, practice and effectiveness. Prerequisite(s): none Corequisite(s): CJUS-105 CJUS 11 6 Crisis Intervention for Criminal Justice Professionals 3 cr. This course was developed through collaboration between criminal justice and mental health practitioners. It is designed to educate students and those individuals currently working in the criminal justice field on issues related to the role of a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) member. The course will cover the legal aspects of mental health commitments; liability issues; mental disorders; indicators of mental illness; understanding mental illness; documentation of incidents; the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively work with the mentally ill, their families, and the mental health system; and intervention strategies for dealing with both low and high risk situations.
