ENGL 257 — Irish Literature
This course exposes students to the literary genres of poetry, fiction, and drama through a survey of modern Irish literature spanning from the Irish Literary Renaissance (starting approximately 1855) through the contemporary era. Emphasizing literature as a reflection of culture and including the discussion of literary terms, close textual reading, and historical backgrounds, students read and analyze poetry, drama, and short stories from influential authors including Yeats, Joyce, O’Brien (both Flann and Edna), Beckett, and Enright, as well as view two film adaptations.
