FIRE 225 — Fire-EMS Mentoring Practicum

1 cr. The fire-EMS mentoring practicum allows experienced students the opportunity to guide, support and inspire mentees in the day -to-day operations of a fire, EMS and/or risk-reduction agency. The course is required of all live-in students who are matriculated in an SMCC academic program each semester that they serve as a live-in student, after they have earned 2 credits in FIRE mentors may earn up to 2 credits in FIRE 225. After earning 4 credits in FIRE 125 -225, enrolling in additional semesters of FIRE 225 is optional for the live-in student. The course is available to non -live-in students who have completed the course prerequisites and who de sire a semester -long workplace mentoring experience as long as mentor is able to enlist a fire - EMS or related sponsori ng organization and supervisor. This leadership applications course allows students to develop leadership skills and apply academic lesson s by serving as a peer mentor in academy and/or academic settings, or serving as peer ambassadors for SMCC public safety programs of study. Each FIRE 225 student will be paired with up to four mentees and will serve as a role model, guide, advisor and coach to help mentees succeed in training, academic and workplace settings.
