HIST 139 — American Environmental History
This course explores the interaction between humans and their environments throughout the history of the United States, from its colonial origins through our contemporary era. Focusing on how Americans and their communities have both shaped and have been shaped by the environment, this course also emphasizes Americans’ perspectives on the environment throughout history, including the idea of wilderness, the advent of conservationism, the study of ecology, and the modern environmental movement. While introducing s tudents to the study of environmental history, this course emphasizes the use of original historical sources and encourages the consideration of contemporary environmental issues in historical context.
