HIST 175 — History of Islam/Middle East
This course p resents a survey of Islamic civilizations from the origins of the Muslim faith until the present day. Topics of study include Islamic origins, the early Islamic conquests, the medieval caliphates, the Crusades and Mongol invasions, the rise of Islamic Asian empires, and the era of Western imperialism in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Special attention will be paid to understanding the Qur'an in its historical context, the status of women in Islamic history, the complex interaction between Islamic societi es and the West in the modern age, and the histories of contemporary issues in the Islamic world, such as the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, the tensions between India and Pakistan, and theocracy in Iran.
