History of Rock will explore the development of one of the major musical art forms in the United States in a chronological survey, from its origins in blues, country, and rockabilly to its varied present-day manifestations. The course will focus on close study of a wide variety of rock music, from Elvis Presley to contemporary compositions. After completing the course, students will understand the historical and cultural origins of rock, as well as the f ormal design and harmonic structure of its major stylistic variations.
