RESP 100 — Respiratory Therapy Patient Care
This course is designed to give the entry -level respiratory therapy student an overview of the development of the respiratory care profession including; its role in health care, relationship to other health care services, organizational structure in the hospital environment, and its relationship to supporting professional organizations. Topics affecting the practice of respiratory care such as professionalism, ethics of health care delivery, medical legal responsibilities of patient care, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), practitioner safety, patient safety and ambulation, cultural competence, death and dying, respirat ory microbiology, blood borne pathogens, universal precautions, generation of orders, electronic charting, and medical terminology will be reviewed. An introduction to respiratory therapy pharmacology drug classification will be included. Focus throughout the course will be on the patient as an individual and central figure in a complex multi -directional health care environment.
