This course is an introduction to the studies of the language, culture and community of deaf people. T opics include deaf history, education, sociology, language, legal issues, art and literature, audism, services for the deaf, organizations, assistive technology devices, and the nature of deafhood. Several controversial issues will be analyzed such as oralism, methods of deaf education, signing systems, cochlear implants, and student protest movements.
