HIT-120 - Introduction to Diagnostic Coding 1 HIT-120 - Introduction to Diagnostic Coding 1 4 credits This course is a comprehensive study of the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases that has been clinically modified (ICD-10-CM) for use in the United States. It is a diagnostic classification system that translates physician documentation of symptoms, injury, disease, and other reasons for a visit into a 3 to 7 alpha and numeric standardized code required to be used for billing purposes. The most important part of diagnostic coding is the ability to follow the many guidelines of this classification system to avoid denial of reimbursement or worse, fraud allegations. The engaged student will be able to decipher medical terminology and will also need a strong understanding of human anatomy as we explore all the major body systems.
