ENGL 223 - The Gothic in Liter. & Cinema ENGL 223 - The Gothic in Liter. & Cinema COMM223 The Gothic in Literature and the Cinema will survey literature and cinema that are considered “Gothic.” Characteristic themes will include authors’ and directors’ conceptions of death and decay, desire and sexuality, obsession and madness. The primary focus of the course will be on the study of literature and cinema. As a result, students will gain familiarity with and experience in: reading and analyzing literacy texts; using literary and cinematic terminology (e.g., genre, allegory, character narrative, misen-scene, montage, auteur, etc.); and writing critical essays that compare and contrast literary and cinematic works. Novels and films will include: Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla, Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, and Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend. In addition, the short stories of Poe, Hawthorne, duMaurier, and others will be read, and films based on these authors’ work and/or themes will be discussed.
