ENGL1619 — Am Lit: Race,Culture,Conflict
Literature has played a significant role in popular conceptions of race, and it has also provided an important venue for the critique of such conceptions. This course examines race in literature as experienced and represented in the United States. In their depictions of slavery, of the Jim Crow South, and of life following the Civil Rights Era, readings will consider racism and ethnocentrism among broader currents that have shaped American history.
