JOUR1000 — Journalism in a Changing World
This course introduces students to the dynamic landscape of modern journalism and its role in a democratic society. The profession of journalism has a unique public service obligation that makes it special and unique. We examine the role of journalism in shaping and influencing human social behavior. The course also explores factors that impact the choices journalists make and their role as “watchdogs” in a democratic society. Topics include the role of journalism in everyday life; journalism genres (e.g. investigative, community, solutions); professional codes and ethical considerations; news literacy and trust in news; the impact of social media on journalism practices; the business of journalism; the First Amendment and freedom of the press; transnational journalism, and more. Students will also learn about journalism's relationship to adjacent professions, including advertising, public relations, and strategic communication. The course features select guest speakers who will enliven the class by sharing perspectives from their experiences with discussion and inquiry. This is a journalism course, and students are expected to regularly engage with the news to stay informed about local, regional, national and international news. Ways to do this: read newspapers (print or online), browse digital-first news websites, scroll through news-related social media content, listen to and watch broadcast news. There will be weekly news quizzes to help students understand and become more aware and engaged with current events that impact our world.
