Texts in Old and Middle English, as well as some Welsh, Old Irish, and Old Norse ones, are the basis for this course, framed by references and uses in the fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien, one of the most influential fantasy writers of the 20th century and a scholar of medieval literature.
