ESCI3302 — Ethnobotany

4 credits · 4 hours

All cultures have an intimate knowledge of their botanical assets and can generally be categorized on use, i.e., food, material culture, medicinal plants, plants used for rituals and religious purposes, adornment and beautification, plants that are mentioned in cultural traditions and folklore, landscapes and plants that are admired for their beauty. The course will examine the evolution of human relationships with plants beginning at the origin of our species, to the domestication of plants and animals, to agribusiness in modern times, and to the more recent attention to the re-emergence of Dynamic Agroforestry Systems.
