GWSS1112 — Foundations/Disability Studies

4 credits · 4 hours

Like Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, disability studies insists on the bodymind as a construct subject to inquiry and interpretation from a variety of intellectual traditions, including eugenics. This course introduces historical, legal, and theoretical texts that have delimited how we think about the bodymind and its capacities. Representations and self-representations (in film and literature) trace the emergence of disability identity as a consequence of the disability rights movement. Study of the role of technology in advancing civil rights and empowerment is paired with accessibility skills to engage students as agents in creating more equitable, inclusive, and participatory communities.
