HUM1802 — Journeys through Hell
What is so mesmerizing about the horrors of hell? What do the many, often very elaborate, descriptions of the afterlife tell us about the cultures that produced them? How has the best known of these, Dante's Inferno, been reimagined since the Middle Ages, and how have other world cultures produced their own depictions of the afterlife? In examining a number of significant works, we will address these and other questions, as we also work to become better readers of literature and film. prereq: new college student in their first semester of enrollment at UMM
