HUM2015 — Ancient Roman Poetry

This course will introduce students to different varieties of ancient Roman poetry. Topics to be covered could include: differing genres (epic, lyric, satiric, and elegiac); ancient Roman poets’ influence on each other; the reworking and adaptations of poetic and literary tropes by different poets; and the historical and cultural context in which Roman poets worked. Authors to be read could include: Lucretius, Catullus, Virgil, Horace, Propertius, Ovid, Martial, Lucan, Juvenal, and Prudentius. All readings will be in English.
