IS1820 — American Roots Music
For most of human history there was no way to record and distribute music on a large scale. Music was a thing that was played and enjoyed locally, leading to an incredible diversity of styles and types. When commercial recording began in the U.S., a snapshot of this diversity was captured, including blues, hillbilly and country, Cajun and zydeco, gospel, and polka music. This course will include exploration of early roots music recordings and the profound impact that recorded music has had from then to now. There will be an opportunity for the students to present their final project as a radio show outside of scheduled class time. prereq: new college student in their first semester of enrollment at UMM
