IS1821 — Coming to the City

This course explores the dynamic interactions that define urban life in cities in the United States and abroad. We will consider how migration reshapes the urban landscape and challenges the rhetoric of monumental and other public spaces in expressing national and cultural identities. Students will engage with a variety of sources, including literature, film, and urban studies scholarship, to develop a nuanced understanding of the interconnected themes of migration, lived spaces, and belonging. This course incorporates discussion and addresses skills essential to academic success, including collaboration, textual analysis, and oral and written expression. prereq: new college student in their first semester of enrollment at UMM.
