SOC2207 — Sociology and Photography

4 credits · 4 hours

The purpose of this course is to use photography as a tool to both see and understand society through a sociological lens. Photographs represent an important and complex source of information about the world around us. Often reflecting and reinforcing socio-cultural norms, photographs influence who we are, what we know, and how we see and interact with others. In this course, students will learn to ask sociological questions when looking at photographs. Students will also learn how sociological concepts (such as the social construction of reality, power relations, social inequalities, and social identities) can be communicated visually.
