3 credits · 3 hours

To meet the current needs of society without compromising future generations, global sustainable development is necessary. Sustainable stewardship of the world’s resources is a circuitous issue that can only be addressed by individuals working together globally; these efforts require a convergence of science and intercultural competence. Students will explore the relationships between self, society, culture, and ecosystems and reflect upon environmental consciousness. Students will examine the intersection of ecosystems, environmental health, culture, social consequence, and economic vitality. This learning opportunity consists of 1) an introduction to the principles of ecosystems and sustainability, 2) an exploration of sustainable efforts, ecotourism and perceptions of locals and tourist, 3) an opportunity to foster a sense of self and expand intercultural competence, and 4) authentic contributions to the expansion and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Students will contribute to quantitative and qualitative inquiries assessing ecotourism impact on fauna, flora, and culture.
