The history of jazz, introducing important stylistic developments and focusing on major innovators such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Their work is examined through recordings, transcriptions and scores. As well, literature and social history from each period are introduced.
