ENG200 — American Literature to 1865

3 Credits American literature from the Pilgrim diaries and Native American legends through the 19th century poets, philosophers and writers, among them Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, Whitman, Douglass and Twain. The course strives to sharpen students’ powers of analysis and interpretation of literature through critical reading and writing with an emphasis on the juxtaposition of the non canonical and canonized literature: men’s, women’s, Native Americans’, African-Americans’ and Spanish-Americans.
