BIOL 436 - Clinical MRI I BIOL 436 - Clinical MRI I (7 credits) This course introduces you to the role of the MR technologist within healthcare organizations. Patient care skills relevant to the scope of an MR technologist will be identified and you will demonstrate general patient care skills in a simulated environment. Basic pharmacology, IV contrast administration and basic nursing skills will be reviewed. Professional attributes demonstrated by MR technologists will be defined. The MRI screening and assessment process for patients, staff and equipment will be reviewed. Management of implanted devices such a pacemakers or neurostimulators will be covered. The design of an MRI facility to support safety, the management of patients with claustrophobia, anxiety or emotional distress will be addressed. The biological effects of the static, gradient and radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as well as the risks associated with acoustic noise will be discussed. The student will perform proper MR screening and develop safe MR practices within the simulated environment and through clinical observation. An overview of the history of MR, fundamental principles of magnetism and instrumentation will be reviewed. Emphasis will be placed on the concepts of the physical principles of MRI to include the basic principles of MRI, signal production, image formation, image weighting and data acquisition.
