ACM 205 — Functional Analysis for Animals

/3 contact hours This course provides a comprehensive exploration of functional analysis as it applies to the behavior of animals with a heavy emphasis on canines. The majority of this course will take place off-campus at a designated shelter within one hour of the Wells campus and will have weekly schedules organized for students at the shelter. As noted in the ACM program description, students will be responsible for transportation to the shelter. Students will help the shelter team facilitate rehoming of shelter dogs and cats with manageable behavioral issues by developing, implementing, and tracking individual behavior modification plans. Students will be required to complete functional assessment plans during the semester. Students may be exposed to other non-canine species during their time and will assist with communications with adopters. Common cases students will be exposed to include social hyper-arousal, barrier related issues, basic obedience, reactivity, confidence building, possessive behavior counterconditioning and desensitization. Prerequisite(s): ACM 102/103 and ACM 120/121. ACM Majors only. Core fulfilled: None
